Now it´s time for me to return to the United States. However, I don´t want to go back at the moment. After the second week of July, I was began to have fun. When I met these graduate students, I said, ¨these are the coolest people that I ever met.¨ Also, I felt that I didn´t accomplish much with speaking spanish. I didn´t really began speaking more spanish until the end of the second week. I couldn´t converse much with the host-mother much because of my lack of proficiency in spanish. Also, when I was in class, I had understood about 10 percent of what the professor was lecturing, in my spanish culture class.

My suggestion is when I want to participate in another study abroad program, I will take more than 2 foreign language classes. Therefore, I will be more confident to speak the language in that country. I wasn´t consistent with spanish, so that is why I felt like I didn´t accomplish the way I would like. I´m not trying to be hard on myself, but I could have put more effort. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to participate in this program. It gave me some insights on what to expect in a study abroad program in the future. I would like to participate in another abroad program, but before I do, I will take more than 2 language classes.

Today was a good day for me. What made Tuesday good beause, I took three of my final exams. I think I had performed well. I have one more exam and I will be finished. After my classes, I went to the house and took a nap. I did not get that much sleep on Monday night, because I was too busy cramming information that I had received from the lectures on Monday that would be added to the final exam. Still, nothing excited that I have did nor didn´t see. The things that I saw were people walking down the street, eating food from restaurants, rushing to class, and having fun. I was sleepy and I wanted to find a bed to lay my head down quickly.

I woke up around 4:45 in the afternnoon and left from the house. I took a walk down Paseo Street and snapped a few shots from my camera. Next, I went inside a nice luxurious hotel. I tried to snap a shot, but the clerk looked at me so hard, so I politely exit from the building. I took a picture of it from the outside, but I wasn´t lucky enough to get one from the inside. I saw a group of elders going inside the hotel. The elders looked like they were from America and wealthy. That hotel had many luxurious furniture, so the cost to sleep for a night is very expensive.

Today was a long day. I thought that the day would never come to an end. In my class, the students and I were preparing for our final exam for Tuesday and Wednesday. I spent most of my time studying for my exams. I wanted to go to take more photos, but I did not have the time. After class, I went to eat lunch at a Chinese restaurant. I have decide to spend my final week eating at different restaurants. After that, I went to the dormotories where the graduate students were residing during the remaining of thier stay. These group of grad students were so nice to me. They are very intelligent and they know a lot about spanish history.

They were so concern about my performance in class, so they took the time to help prepare for my exam. Also, they gave me some info for my 8 page research on ¨The Spanish Golden Age.¨ My suggestion for students is to socialize with students that are more informed than you, because you can learn a lot from them. I personally don´t mind being around students that´s more informed than me; it does not mean that I´m dumb, but that´s one my ways to grow and not to become arrogant. I will miss these group of students. These students are from Gabon, in West Africa.

I was lucky to go see two wedding ceremonies. I was walking pass a church carrying three shopping bags. I had my camera bag wrapped around my waist. I was walking far from the Plaza Mayor, taking pictures of the old and new cathedral. Suddenly, I saw a group of people going inside the church. At first, I thought the group of people were taking a tour, until I got closer and show them dressed up. A lady in front of the cathderal said unto me to come inside. I replied, ¨Okay. Thanks.¨ I said to myself, ¨a wedding. alright.¨

I went inside and saw the newlywed couple. I was sitting near the door because, when I wanted to leave earlier (which had happened), I can leave quietly. I must say, both of the wedding ceremonies were sooo long. All I wanted to see was bride and groom kiss and walk down the aisle together. The priest was talking too much. I couldn´t understand what he was saying, so that made even worse. However, I did like the dressing style of the bride and the bridesmaid. I try to snap a good shot, but it wasn´t much light. I didn´t want to leave, but time was going by too fast and I had to me with some grad students at a cafe.

I went to eat at Shaw with a graduate student that evening. We were on our way to the El savor for a poetry reading. That was my first time going to a poetry set in Salamanca. It was an audiovisual poetry presentation by Jaime Sabines. Jamine Sabines is from Mexico. Most of the poetry I didn´t understood, because the lack of proficiency in spanish, but I had interpretted that the poems were reveal some cultural and historical matters. The graduate student that I was out with loves poetry. Me on the other hand like poetry, but never wrote a poem. There was not many people at the set, but I expected a small crowd.

After the poetry set, I walked back to the apartment to prepare for the next day. The neighbors were so noisy. I was having a hard time studying because of the neighbors. In my opinion, they sounded like they were drinking, because they sounded so lousy within their conversation. I still did not receive better results after closing the window. So, I grabbed my headsets, put them on my ears, turned it on, and laid down. I had woke up three in the morning to turn my headsets off.

It was after midnight when I walked down the Pasceo Estacion street. I couldn´t go to sleep, so I decided to take a walk. I walked to the Plaza Mayor to buy me a strawberry smoothy. Next, I walked around the plaza for little while, and walked back to the apartment. On way back, I saw three teenage boys trying to ride on one bicycle. They didn´t ride far enough, because, as soon as the boy put his other foot on the right paddle, the bike fell. That was a funny moment for me. I was about to take a picture of the boys falling to the ground, but the batteries inside the camera ran out of energy.

I walked home to the apartment laughing. I said to myself, ¨that was the stupidiest thing that somebody can ever do¨. The young boys had to come from United States, because I cannnot imagine spainards young boys doing something stupid like that. Speaking of teenagers, in Salamanca, the teenagers be in the bed hours before midnight. The children have a curfew. The only time that the children can stay out late is when they are with their parents. I recieved this information from my host-mother. She raised two children, so she knows more about the lifestyle of adolescents in Salamanca than I do. The host-mother and I are now conversating with one another in spanish. She came to realize that I was trying my best through my studys. She finally came around and stopped showing favoritism. I am much comfortable now than a week and a half ago.

After coming from the museum, we ate lunch at Burger King. Then, we walked around in the area near the Pardo museum, so we want get lost. We took a bus from the train station to the museum. It was a twewnty-five minute ride. While waiting to arrive to our destination, we were sight-seeing throught out the bus windows. We brought our spanish dictionaries just in case we needed to do some translating. Shelly used her dictionary a few times, but not me. I made an effort to try to talk to some people in Madrid.

It was a very hot day in Madrid, the temperature had to be in the 90´s, because I was burning up. I was so hot, every 15 minutes, I had to drink some water. Me and Shelly had found a nice park with some breeze and sat down. Around midnight, we arrived back to Salamanca. I didn´t want to come back, because I felt in love with the city. I plan to take another trip to Mardrid before July 27, 2007. I want to a least spend one day, instead of eight hours. Time went by so fast that I thought we were there for four hours.

That afternoon, I was walking from class on my way to the house. There came an old spainard man walking behind me with his cane. He was following me for quite a while. I didn´t panic at all. Next, the old man said, ¨hello¨. I turned around and spoke back to him. Then he grab my left hand and held it tight. He was speaking spanish so fast, so I couldn´t understand what he was saying. However, I was becoming a little nervous, because he kept holding my hand tight. I wanted to take my right hand and push him, but instead, I said, ¨if you don´t let go, I will get the police¨ in spanish. Finally, he let my hand go and I quickly walked away.

I was mad angry for a while. I didn´t feel better, til later that evening when I met some graduate students from the United States. They were three from Georgia, and one from Jamaica. They were really nice people. During the time that I was conversating with them in spanish, they were kind enough to correct me when I made a mistake. I appreciate their patience and kindness. I walked with them to see the dormitory that the were residing for the summer. The residence was really nice. They were staying at the new dormitory. I stay with them for an hour, and went home. But before I left, we made arrangements to meet on 7/19/07 for dinner.

I wanted to go take a tour to the cathedral, but I arrive 15 minutes before they close. The cost to take a tour around the whole cathedral is 3 dollars. I´m going this weekend to take the tour of the cathedral with a classmate, who been here in Salamanca for three months. Also, I saw some nuns walking to the church wearing gray dresses. I was going to take a picture of them, but I had reconsidered. I said to myself that would be rude to take a photo without there permission. So, later that afternoon, I walked back to the San Boal building to do research on my topic, after taking photos of the cathedral (exterior).

I was so upset to see the computer room so full all the time. By us being students I would think that they would have more access for computers. We should not have to pay to use the computer elsewhere. They should have more than one building to use the computers. I am not satisfied with this matter. Hopefully, next year the people here in Salamanca University do a better job, in providing more computers use, without paying. I didn´t get a chance to use the computer, so I went to the apartment and studied.

I spend the afternoon with a professor from Georgia and her friends. Her name is Imani. She teaches spanish at a university in Atlanta. I met Imani on July 2, 2007, where we had the welcoming of students. She not only bilingual, but multilignual. She speaks four languages. She been to Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, France, Senegal, Peru, and Haiti. It was a pleasure to meet her, she is intelligent, nice, and a motivator. We speaking spanish and she encouraged me not to give up on it, because of the little fluency of spanish.

I met with her at the Cuenta residence around 12:30. We walked to the plaza to meet up with her friend. Next, we walked to the bus stop to catch the number 8 bus. This bus took us to la Aldehuela. We got out the bus and walked through the Sports park. Then, we waited for 20 minutes to meet Imani´s friend friends. Twenty minutes later, they came with a bag and a grill. I said to myelf, wow, she invited me to a barbecue with her friends, I felt honored. Imani´s friend Belyndia is from Brazil and Belyndia´s friends are from Cuba, and El Saldor. We had a good time talking and eating spicy food. Her friends were very patience listening to me, because I told them I was a beginner in speaking spanish. The afternoon turned out great. After eating, we went to see the Rio Tormes, and headed back to the city.

It was after 1 a.m. when me and Bianca went dancing. It took us 30 minutes to look for the place. We were walking around and checking out other dance clubs before we went to El Salvor. We looked at two clubs that played hip-hop music, but I wanted to leave quickly. It was too crowded and, the dances that people were doing were very exotic. Then finally, we went to the El Salvor. When I heard the salsa music playing outside, I was anxious to go inside. When I went in I saw people doing the salsa on the dance floor, but I had a hard time getting in because it was crowded.

When me and Bianca got closer to the dance floor, I saw some people that I met at the gathering on July 2nd. So I went over to talked them, and introduced Bianca to them. Next, we were on the dance floor. Me and Bianca were taking pictures on the dance floor, and snapped shots at our dance partners. We were at the El Salvor for an hour and thirty minutes. The smoking gave me a headache, and Bianca had to leave to wake up early in the morning, to go on a trip. When I got home, I quickly laid my head down in the bed.

That evening on Independence Day was my first time going to the plaza at night. I was bored at the apartment, so I went out. At the Plaza, I saw four of my classmates dining out at a restaurant. I wanted to join them so bad, but I accidently left my wallet at the apartment. So I walked around for fifiteen more minutes and walked back to the apartment. On my way back to the apartment, there was a woman (who looked about my age) was walking behind me. She frowned at me, and she also had this look like she wanted to hit me.

I made it back to the apartment safely with no bruises. I happened to speed walk, so that I could keep a far distance away from the woman. I saw her a few times in the mornings while walking to class. She nevered frowned at me then, so why now. I don´t know her and I never did anything to upset her. Oh well, that´s how some people are. But anyway, where was I, oh, the streets in Salamanca are interesting. Their sidewalks are different than Chicago. Also, their street signs are on the buildings, not on the light poles like United States.

What I like about Professor Agustin´s class is that he gives us a lot of writing to do. I prefer doing more writing than speaking. When I write, my ideas comes through quickly. I have no trouble writing in spanish. For me, that´s how I learn the little spanish that I know today. I think I will enjoy his class as long as he remain in his exact pace. He doesn´t move too fast nor move too slow. Also, he speaks spanish slowly so the students can comprend better. I know that spanish is a fast language, but as a beginner, I need to be around the people who speak spanish slow.

After class, I went to the apartment to lunch. My host mother converse with me in spanish a little bit. That made me feel more relieved. I told her that I need to learn more and practice more, so she agreed to assist me. Now that I can practice spanish in the classroom, at the apartment, and outside with my classmates and new associates that I met at the orientation. I told one of my associates from Brazil and from France that I will hang out with them this weekend. So far, I´m having fun.

Later that afternoon, I went to the apartment to eat lunch. I took a nap for 45 minutes. After my nap, I left from the apartment and headed towards the campus. I picked up my results from the placement exam, and received my book and folder for my classes. Around 8 p.m. I walked around the campus and took pictures of different colleges and faculty buildings. I also took pictures of the classrooms that I will be studying throughout the summer sessions.

At 10 p.m., I returned to the apartment and ate dinner. Then I went into the bedroom to rest for 20 minutes. That evening, I was suppose to meet with Gaby and my classmates to go to the movies movie. Unfortunately, I felt asleep, so I missed out on the outing. My intention was to meet up with Gaby and my classmates, because I still wasn´t comfortable with the host family. They still talked to my roommate more than me, because she speaks more spanish than me. However, I think they should be more considerate. They should understand that I´m making an effort to learn spanish, that´s why I´m here.
